Every six months or so for about the last five years, a group of retirees (R) from the Accounting and Computer Education (ACE) department have been connecting over the lunch buffet at Aaltos Garden Cafe on McPhillips.

Retired Business instructor Gerry Varnes was inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame in the official category on October 3 at the Canad Inns Polo Park.
Gerry officiated minor through to University and senior hockey and I personally had the pleasure of working with Gerry in both minor hockey and the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. You can read his full bio on the MHHOF website.
I like the photo of Gerry with his refereeing equipment (right), from which he then picked up and blew his whistle before leaving the stage following his induction and comments. He wasn’t assessing a penalty, although it looked like he might.

Armin Wiebe referred to himself in a September 2015 Free Press article as “a footnote in the Manitoba writing community”. Those of us who remember Armin from his days at the Exchange District Campus or who have followed his writing career might disagree. His 2004 novel, Tatsea (which, by the way is available in the RRC library), won both the Margaret Laurence Award for Fiction and the McNally Robinson Book of the Year Award. And he has certainly not been just sitting on his hands since retiring in 2008 after twelve years as an instructor of creative writing at RRC. Continue reading
