2. Blanket Exercise – Registration Now Open

The Blanket Exercise is a new workshop for all RRC employees to help foster reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. It brings participants into a simulation of the colonization of Canada and allows people to relate to history from a first-person perspective.

During the workshop, you will walk on blankets representing the land and roles of First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples. Through a facilitated simulation, you will experience your “outcome” as you literally “walk” through an experience of colonization to present day. Trained facilitators assume various roles and a lead facilitator and Elders guide the experience. The day also includes a de-brief talking circle to discuss the learning experience, process feelings, ask questions, share insights and deepen understanding.

It is important to know that the Blanket Activity is often emotional and impactful. Due to the depth of the experience, the workshop approach and supporting resources are rooted in trauma-informed care principles. RRC is committed to providing a caring and supportive experience for participants.

This workshop will be held in the Indigenous Centre, F209 on the following dates. Click on the date you want to start the registration process. Be sure to confirm your supervisor’s support and complete a Staff Development Form as well.

1. New Year, New Paper Reduction Goals

With the new year, comes a new term which means the chance to further reduce paper consumption here at the College.

Since 2016, the Print Optimization Working Group has worked on many initiatives to optimize our print environment and reduce our paper consumption at the College. One of the ways we have tracked our progress is by tracking staff and student paper usage from printing and photocopying by term. If you’ve been in the NDC Library Hallway lately, you may have noticed the large RRC Printing by the Numbers display which shows our progress year-over-year by term (Fall 2019/20 numbers coming very soon!). We are excited to share that with each year, we continue to reduce our paper consumption at the College.

Let’s keep the ball rolling and make a bigger commitment to reducing our printing in 2020! Come by the Library Hallway this Thursday to pledge a new year’s paper reduction resolution and enter a prize draw. Check out our newest numbers and take a look at the pledges you can make on Thursday here!

6. Are your students engaged interculturally?

Every year, Red River College welcomes over 1,700 immigrant and international students to pursue full-time academic studies. Manitoba regularly welcomes new immigrants to continue to grow the economy and enhance cultural diversity. Having an understanding of diversity and cross-cultural communication are important power skills to have in our global economy. Being able to build intercultural bridges will help our students succeed in the global economy.

Encourage your students to volunteer with the Intercultural Mentorship Program. This partnership between a Canadian-raised student (or staff) and an immigrant/international student requires a 10 hour commitment over the course of a term. The program provides opportunities to share each other’s culture (the similarities and differences), create meaningful connections, and develop employability skills.

Several academic programs are using this intercultural experiential learning opportunity as credit towards service learning assignments.

As a bonus, successful program completion makes students eligible for one of two $1,000 awards.

1. Call for Proposals is OPEN! RED Forum 2020

RED Forum, RRC’s largest professional development day, has a reputation for quality PD sessions thanks in large part to the presenters within our walls.

Whether you’ve presented in the past or are a first-timer with a great idea, this is your chance. The Call for Proposals is now open and will run until February 3. You are invited to put your idea forward.

Take a moment to review the overview and submission form. An early peek helps – you may want to discuss a topic with others for feedback or start knocking on some doors if you’re thinking about co-presenting.

Note: For this year, we’ve made the submission form shorter, and we’ve also introduced some new formats!  Click here to read on!

2. APA 7th ed. HIGHLIGHTS GUIDE

The newest edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association was published in October 2019. Commonly known as “APA”, this citation style is used by many departments at RRC, especially those in the Allied Health disciplines.

This guide will assist you in navigating the new 7th edition of the APA. There are a lot of changes but here are the most important that students and faculty need to know.

Find the APA 7th ed. HIGHLIGHTS guide here:

RRCLibrary.libguides.com/APA7

or

  1. Go to library.rrc.ca
  2. Click on the orange image: “Your GUIDE is ready”
  3. Select the subject box – APA 7th ed. HIGHLIGHTS guide is in the STUDENT SUCCESS section – to see all the guides on this subject
  4. Click the desired guide and you have a great starting point.

Other guides you may find interesting:

What is a guide?

Guides are curated web pages created by our Library staff. Many people who are starting to explore a topic aren’t sure where to start – there are so many options and it can be overwhelming.

Guides are a starting spot for students looking for more information on a particular topic in the collection. A guide will typically include featured books and journals (both print and electronic), databases, videos (DVDs and streaming) and websites. They may also include specialized information specific to the topic.

Your GUIDE is ready!

Stay tuned for more details coming up tomorrow!

3. Flags flown at half-mast today in recognition of Don Robertson

It is with heavy hearts that we share with the Red River College community the passing of Donald (Dulas) Robertson.

As the first Dean of Aboriginal Education and Institutional Diversity, Robertson was integral in establishing the Indigenous Education supports and programs that we are so proud of today.

He established the Aboriginal Education and Institution Diversity Department, launched the first Aboriginal Awareness Day in 1996, the first Aboriginal programs, as well as the very first RRC Pow Wow. Robertson still had close ties with the College and had hoped to continue supporting the development of future Indigenous strategies at RRC.

He was born and raised in Norway House, where he spent most of his youth on the land with family, or in the water at the shore on Robertson’s Bay. He received honourary doctorates from the University of Manitoba and Brandon University, the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal, and the Order of Manitoba.

He will be deeply missed by all those who had the opportunity to cross paths with him.

A funeral service will be held at Westworth United Church, 1750 Grosvenor Avenue, on Monday, January 6, 2020, at 11:00 a.m. Private interment will take place at a later date in Melita.
